‘The Golden Mile’ walk was created in the autumn of 2013. This came about as the result of a Sligo County Council Competition, to encourage the establishment of one-mile walks within the county.
Dromore West won “Overall Winner” for their application.
The one-mile walk stretches from Orville Park to Ballygilcash Hill. From the top of Ballygilcash Hill you can take in the panoramic and spectacular landscape of Sligo. You will see the Watchtower and Iron Age fort on Carrowmably to the left, Innismurray Island in the Atlantic, the Donegal Hills, The Benbulben, Knocknarea Mountain and Queen Maeve’s cairn ahead, and to the right the Ox Mountains all the way to West Sligo in the direction of Lough Easkey.
Interesting flora and fauna, fine stone walls, and other historical connections pertaining to the past history of the area, can be noted as you walk.
